چکیده
Trichinellosis, is normally not included among those regarded as emerging zoonoses because it has been a public health threat for more than 150 years. However, its dramatic re-emergence in many areas around the world over the past 10±20 years, inspite of a century of veterinary public health efforts to control and eradicate it, justi®es it being included in this group. The reasons for this re-emergence are diverse, and include human pertubation and manipulation of ecosystems, war and political turmoil, rapidly changing food distribution and marketing systems, and even, surprisingly, rising af̄ uence in developing countries. These in ̄uences, and their impact on the epidemiology of both domestic and sylvatic trichinellosis, are discussed, along with recommendations for confronting this altered status as a public health threat. q 2000 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. When does a correct mutual exclusion algorithm guarantee mutual exclusion?
Dijkstra introduced mutual exclusion for an N -process system as the requirement “that at any moment only one of these N cyclic processes is in its critical section” [1]. This requirement, which we call true mutual exclusion, is still the standard definition of mutual exclusion. Mutual exclusion algorithms for shared-memorymultiprocessors do not guarantee true mutual exclusion. We give a simple...

DNA sequence divergence at internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS-1 and ITS-2) was compared with divergence at mitochondrial cox1 or nad4 loci in pairs of congeneric nematode species. Mitochondrial sequences accumulate substitutions much more quickly than internal transcribed spacer, the difference being most striking in the most closely related species pairs. Thus, mitochondrial DNA may be t...

Larval helminths that share the same intermediate host may or may not also share the same de®nitive hosts. If one or more of these helminth species can manipulate the phenotype of the intermediate host, there can be great advantages or severe costs for other helminths resulting from co-occurring with a manipulator, depending on whether they have the same de®nitive host or not. Among 2372 specim...
متن کاملScheduling on a Single Processor with Variable Speed
Alidaee and Ahmadian considered a single machine scheduling problem with varying processing times, and presented a polynomial algorithm that minimizes the sum of absolute deviations of jobs’ completion times from a common due date. In this short note we remark that it is possible to eliminate one of the algorithm steps, therefore obtaining a more efficient procedure. We also show that the appro...
